Our Work

Fostering Community

Vibrant, robust, and lasting communities for atheists and other nonreligious people are a vital lifeline for many all across the country.

Our Philosophy

We know that grassroots and online communities serve as a vital lifeline for countless atheists, humanists, and nonreligious people all across our nation — and the world.

We help groups get started — and keep going — by creating resources for leaders and organizers. That means training, mentoring, and creating opportunities for collaboration with grassroots activists from all across the country.

And we make sure members of our community always have a voice in our work.

Our Approach to Building Strong Community

Our most successful, engaged, and active community groups are those that provide a wide range of events and activities to fully meet the needs of their members. While every group is different, we encourage atheist communities to engage in four key areas programming: Activism, Community, Education, and Service. We provide our network of more than 250 affiliated community groups nationwide with access to toolkits, resources, guides, and direct funding to help get started!

Activism

Atheists care deeply about a range of issues, from protecting the separation of religion from government and ending discrimination against LGBTQ people to protecting secular public schools and addressing climate change. Whatever issues excite you, we’re here to help you get involved and make a difference.

Community

For atheists, a strong community fills the gap left by religious institutions, offering friendship and support based on our common humanity. It provides a safe harbor where we can celebrate our values, find strength in numbers, and face the world together. Our communities empower atheists to live authentically and navigate life’s challenges together.

Education

Learning about the world around us empowers our community to navigate a complex world with critical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and a deeper understanding of the things that shape our lives. American Atheists believes that committing to lifelong learning strengthens the foundation of our shared values and our democracy.

Service

For atheists, our commitment to service is driven by a deep sense of responsibility to solve problems through direct, practical action. Serving others is a powerful opportunity to work side-by-side with others to build bridges of understanding. Working to improve the world around us proves that shared values matter more than shared beliefs.
