David Silverman

David Silverman

President

David Silverman is President of American Atheists and was the creator and Executive Producer of the 2012 Reason Rally. He attended Brandeis University, where he completed his Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science while honing his debating skills with theists in numerous informal debates. Dave served as a professional inventor at Bell Labs for 8 years (74 issued patents) and a Marketing Director for Natural Microsystems.

He has been an atheist since he was 6-years-old. Dave became an activist in 1996 and soon became New Jersey State Director. He also founded the Alliance of Lucent and AT&T Atheists and Secularists, the first employee club of its kind. He was tapped to be the National Spokesperson in 2004, and then was named Vice President in 2008. The Board of Directors elected Dave as President in September of 2010.

Mr. Silverman has appeared on most major news programs including The O'Reilly Factor (spawning the famous "WTF meme-face"), Scarborough Country, The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer, CNN's Paula Zahn NOW, Nick News, Hannity and Colmes, FOX and Friends, NPR's All Things Considered, and many more. David hosts the Atheist Viewpoint TV show with co-host Dennis Horvitz.

Amanda Knief

Amanda Knief

Managing Director

Amanda Knief is a public policy and constitutional expert on religious freedom and civil liberties. She is the author of The Citizen Lobbyist: A How-to Manual for Making Your Voice Heard in Government. Amanda has a JD from Drake University Law School and a BS in journalism and science communication from Iowa State University. She has previously worked as a legal counsel and legislative drafter for the Iowa Legislature and the lobbyist for the Secular Coalition for America.

Amanda Knief is the Managing Director and In-House Counsel for American Atheists. She coordinates with staff and volunteers to handle logistics, policy issues, and the president's schedule. Amanda also acts as American Atheists' human resources manager.

Nick Fish

Nick Fish

Development Director

Nick Fish is a civil rights and civil liberties activist with extensive fundraising experience with many of the nation's most prominent political organizations and progressive non-profits. A native of Michigan, Nick studied political science at Albion College before working in Raleigh, North Carolina to register more than 5,000 new voters and knock on 25,000 doors in the two months leading up to the 2008 election. Since then, Nick has worked in donor outreach, marketing, and fundraising, most recently as the Development Manager for the Secular Coalition for America.

As Development Director, Nick oversees member relations, fundraising, and the continued growth of the organization. In addition, Nick works with the American Atheists staff to develop messaging and outreach strategies, particularly in the arena of politics and policy.

David Muscato

Public Relations Director

Dave Muscato is a writer, activist, and public speaker. A former Christian praise & worship musician, he has been active in the atheism movement since 2009, and with American Atheists since 2013. 

As Public Relations Director of American Atheists, Muscato manages American Atheists' online social networking presence, works directly with media outlets, promotes American Atheists in as many venues as possible, updates the blog portion of the American Atheists' web page, issues press releases to the media and general public, and works directly with the administrative team at American Atheists to project its vision and mission.

Muscato's projects have appeared in Rolling Stone, People, Time, The New York Times, SPIN, Entertainment Weekly, Billboard Magazine, and on MTV News, NPR, MSNBC, Kevin & Bean/KROQ in LA, and Howard Stern. Originally from Missouri and an avid traveler, he has been to more than 130 cities in 6 countries. He also enjoys playing bass guitar.

Todd Jones

Todd Jones

Operations Director

Todd has been with American Atheists since 2009 and is currently the Operations Director of American Atheists and Director of the Atheist Viewpoint. Prior to American Atheists he worked as Office Manager for the Chatham, Park Imperial and Time Warner South Tower Condominiums with Related Management in New York, as well as Marketing Director for the Columbia University Bookstore. Todd holds an MFA in Theatre from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and also has over 20 years of professional experience as a freelance Director and Actor.  When he is not at his desk or behind a camera at American Atheists he keeps busy directing and performing in theatre productions across New Jersey.

PAMela WHISSEL

Editor, American Atheist Magazine

Pamela Whissel has been editor-in-chief of American Atheist magazine since 2011. Her M.A. is from the University of Cincinnati and her B.A. is from the University of Dayton. Prior to coming to American Atheists, she was a local news anchor for a National Public Radio affiliate in Kentucky, a television news writer for the CBS station in Cincinnati, and an announcer for Cincinnati’s public television pledge drives. 

Under her direction, the magazine made publishing history when it went from a subscription-only publication to one that is sold in bookstores throughout the US and Canada. In doing so, American Atheist has become the first periodical in US history to appear on newsstands with the word “atheist” in the title. 

Pamela is also the paralegal to American Atheists’ National Legal Director Edwin Kagin. She has assisted in all aspects of American Atheists’ lawsuits filed against the IRS, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, the Kentucky Dept. of Homeland Security, and the County of Bradford in Florida.

Dennis Horvitz

Host, Atheist Viewpoint

Dennis Horvitz has a background in theater and music, having appeared in various productions and rock bands in Boston and New York. He began his active relationship with American Atheists July 4th weekend, 2003 when he was interviewed on our public access cable TV show, "Atheist Viewpoint," by then-American Atheists president, Ellen Johnson. The interview went so well that immediately after the taping she asked him to be her co-host. He accepted and the rest is history.

Ken Loukinen  

Ken Loukinen

Director of State & Regional Operations

Ken Loukinen oversees the State & Regional Directors of American Atheists. Ken is a founding member and past president of FLASH (Florida Atheists and Secular Humanists) and a member of the American Atheists Board of Directors. Ken started working with American Atheists as the South Florida Regional Director and was appointed to his current position in 2010. Ken is a retired Paramedic / Firefighter and served in the United States Army as a Combat Medic. Ken has appeared on a number of local, state, and regional television and radio programs and is an outspoken advocate for increased science standards in Florida public schools.

Greg Lammers

Greg Lammers

National Affiliate Director

Greg Lammers was appointed National Affiliate Director in April 2013. Before being named to his current position he served four years as American Atheists State Director for Missouri. Greg has traveled extensively representing American Atheists and has spoken on atheism, freethought, and inter-group communication and cooperation, at numerous conferences and events. He is also the founder and co-organizer of Columbia Atheists in Columbia, Missouri. Greg lives in Columbia with his wife Katie and their two young sons.

LAURIE HILL

Bookkeeper

Laurie has worked as a professional bookkeeper for more than 40 years and has been with American Atheists since 2010. Laurie is married and has 2 children and 3 granddaughters. In her spare time, Laurie works with her daughter to designs, make, and sell crafts and girls' accessories.
