AMERICAN ATHEISTS ACTION ALERT

March 10, 2003

SATURDAY DEMO TO PROTEST "NO ATHEISTS IN FOXHOLES" MYTH AT NBC NEWS, ROCKEFELLER CENTER, NYC

Once again, NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw has repeated that old canard, "There are no atheists in foxholes."

This claim is wrong, and a distinguished journalist like Mr. Brokaw should not be making it on national television. What if this was said about Jews, Blacks, Roman Catholics or some other group?

AMERICAN ATHEISTS invites fellow nonbeliever individuals and groups to join us this Saturday, March 15, 2003 in New York City as we picket the offices of NBC. Familiarize yourself with this issue, and bring signs. This peaceful demonstration will take place from 12 noon to 1:30 PM. (After that, we hope to have an informal social event.)

NBC is located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan (MapQuest Map). See below for exact location of protest.

We also encourage you to send polite e-mails and letters to NBC. Contact the network at Nightly@nbc.com or NBC News, 30 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10112.

Update:

The Saturday demonstration will take place beginning at 12 noon at Rockefeller Plaza. We will gather under the NBC "marquee" which is located in the GE building, 50th Street between 5th Avenue and 6th Avenue.

How To Get There:

Once in Manhattan, the NBC Studios are accessible from the NYCTA Bus Lines, including M1, M2, M3, M4, M5, M6, M7, M27 and M50.

You can also use the NYCTA Subway Lines B, D, F, V, N, W, R, 1 and 9

From Penn Station or the Port Authority, take the Queens-bound E subway train to the 5th Avenue stop, which is also on 53rd St.  Walk west one block and south three blocks to get to 6th Avenue and 50th Street, under the NBC marquee.

(A preceding transfer at the 7th Avenue station to the southbound B or D would put you right at Rockefeller Plaza.  But some people who do that WILL accidentally take the northbound train, so I recommend sticking to the E, which means a couple of blocks of walking but no risk of getting lost.)

Map of NYC subway, which you can also ask for at any token booth (tokens are $1.50, maps free): New York City Subway.

Getting into New York City:

Driving into New York City, particularly Manhattan, can prove to be difficult. We suggest that you take mass transit.

From Washington, Philadelphia and other points south, consider taking AMTRAK. Look for the best fares at www.amtrak.com. There is Acela Express service, along with the less expensive Regional trains. AMTRAK will take you to Penn Station, where taxis and other transit is easily available.

You may also rendezvous with us on Saturday morning at the American Atheists Center in Cranford, NJ. Be there between 9:30 AM and 9:45 AM. We will car pool to the Metropark AMTRAK station.

Or, you can meet us at the Metropark Station located at 100 Middlesex-Essex Tpk. This is off Exit 131 of the Garden State Parkway. We will be meeting there to take the 10:15 AMTRAK train into New York City, and from Penn Station we will make our way to the demonstration point.

For further information contact Dave Silverman, NJ State Director for American Atheists through dsilverman@atheists.org, or at 732-302-2993.

Ideas for Signs:

We will try to provide everyone signs, but you can also bring your own. Suggested slogans include:

"Thanks Atheist Veterans!
"Thanks Foxhole Atheists"
