RULES AND REQUIREMENTS

The theme of the Art Show “Atheism Alive in Art.”

American Atheists welcomes artists from all over the world to apply! Artists are invited to bring one-of-a-kind original artwork to display and auction at the 50^th Anniversary American Atheists National Convention in Austin, Texas, March 28-31.

Artwork displayed in the Art Show and Silent Auction must be one-of-a-kind items, not available elsewhere and available to be sold by silent auction during the Art Show and Silent Auction at the National Convention. No reprints, copies, additional pieces, smaller replicas, or additional works of the artwork in the Art Show and Silent Auction shall be sold at this convention. Artists wishing to sell a large quantity of merchandise through traditional means may purchase an exhibitor’s table separate from the Art Show and Silent Auction during the National Convention.

APPLICATIONS: Art Show Applicants must submit an application form, a nonrefundable $25 application fee, and 3 high resolution images to American Atheists (2 images of individual artistic pieces and 1 image of the applicant’s booth. If the applicant does not yet have a booth (mandatory for Art Show and Silent Auction exhibition), the applicant may photograph a group display of artistic pieces representative of the work that would be present at his or her booth). 

Completed applications along with application fees must be received to American Atheists by December 15, 2012.

Artists who are invited to exhibit (invitations will be sent by January 3, 2013) must return their signed contract and nonrefundable booth fee ($100) by January 31, 2013. Failure to return both the signed contract and booth fee by January 31, 2013, will result in having that artist’s spot offered to another applicant.

Exhibit booths at the 1^st Annual American Atheists Art Show and Silent Auction will be awarded on the basis of random selection from those artists who submit completed applications and so that as many of the categories of art are filled.

Art Show applicants must fit one of the categories listed below.

COSTS: Application for the Art Show is $25, is nonrefundable, and must be included with the application form in order for the artist to be considered for the Art Show. Artists who are selected for the Art Show and Silent Auction must submit a booth fee of $100 to reserve their spot.

THE ART SHOW AND SILENT AUCTION

All work must be original, produced by the artist, and signed. Each piece must represent atheism, skepticism, science, or interpret nontheism in an artistic manner. Be creative, be bold, but be relevant to the theme.

All work must be displayed and numbered or lettered with nonpermanent identification to be easily identified for silent auction.

Artists must allow art to be accessible to attendees. Artists will be provided index cards for each piece of art for the silent auction. Only auctioned artwork will be permitted in the Art Show and Silent Auction.

At least one volunteer will be stationed at a control table in the Art Show and Silent Auction room to help attendees sing-up for the silent auction. The volunteer(s) will not be allowed to watch or sit at artist’s booths; please make arrangements to have others to cover for the artists if he or she will want breaks to eat, etc.

The Art Show and Silent Auction room will be locked during non-setup and overnight hours. Artists are responsible for their artwork and materials at all times. American Atheists is not responsible for any loss, damage, or theft at any time during the National Convention or the Art Show and Silent Auction.

HOURS:

• Set-up is required Thursday, March 28, 2013. The Art Show and Silent Auction room will be open beginning at 8 a.m. 
• Life Member Cocktail Party: Artists should be ready to meet and greet American Atheists Life Members and guests at a cocktail party in the Art Show room at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Silent Auction begins during the cocktail party. 

• Friday: Art Show and Silent Auction hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Saturday: Art Show and Silent Auction hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Sunday: Art Show and Silent Auction hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

BOOTH SPECIFICATIONS
There will be 10-12 booths.

Each booth area is 10’ x 8’. Display equipment is the artist’s responsibility and must be limited to the assigned space. All materials must be kept within the booth area. Booth assignments will provided at the time of the contract.

SILENT AUCTION
All artwork displayed in the Art Show and Silent Auction shall be available for sale by Silent Auction. American Atheists makes no guarantees that any or all artwork will sale or minimum prices. Artists may set a minimum price, but must notify American Atheists officials BEFORE the Art Show and Silent Auction and receive approval. Artists may also set a standard price for shipping that may be advertised during the Art Show and Silent Auction—this should include insurance costs. When the Silent Auction ends at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 31, the artists shall return the noe cards to the control table and will be given the customer contact information. Artists are responsible for collecting their own payments and for reporting sales tax. If the winner refuses to accept the artwork or pay, the artist shall contact American Atheists employees.

If for any reason you are unable to attend the Art Show, please notify us immediately by telephone. (908-276-7300, x 9)

If an emergency arises during the Art Show and it is necessary to leave, the artist must notify an American Atheists employee before dismantling and leaving.

American Atheists does not assume responsibility for exhibits or artwork. American Atheists reserves the right to make all decisions concerning participation.

ARTISTIC CATEGORIES
These categories will be used by American Atheists as a tool for organizing artists’ images into logical, relevant groups for selection review. American Atheists seeks a balanced show that equally showcases works of fine art and craft art as well as diversity of media. However, American Atheists has no quota or preference for any media category.

Ceramics: All original clay and porcelain work other than jewelry is accepted in this category. No machine-made or mass produced work is permitted.

Digital Art: This category includes any original work for which the original image, or the manipulation of other source material, was executed by the artist using a computer. Traditional photographs taken through a digital media should apply in the photography category.

Drawing: Works created using dry media including chalk, charcoal, pastels, pencil, wax crayon, etc. or from the fluid medium of inks and washes applied by pen or brush are included in this category.

Fiber: All work crafted from fibers including basketry, embroidery, weaving, leatherwork, tapestry and papermaking. No machine tooling, machine-screened patterns, or other forms of mass production are permitted. No factory produced wearable items, regardless of additional modification or enhancement by the artist, may be exhibited.

Glass: No forms of mass production are permitted.

Jewelry: All jewelry, whether the work is produced from metal, glass, clay, fiber, paper, plastic, or other materials must be entered into this category. No commercial casts, molds, or production studio work is allowed. As stated above, these must be unique items.

Metalworks: Includes all non-sculptural, non-jewelry works crafted from metal. No production studio work is allowed.

Mixed Media: This category includes works, both 2- and 3-dimensional, that incorporate more than one type of physical material to produce. Includes non-sculptural work as determined by the artist.

Painting: Works created in oils, acrylics, watercolor, etc. are in this category. Originals only; reproductions are not allowed.

Photography: Photographic prints made from the artist’s original image, which have been processed by that artist or under his or her direct supervision, are included in this category. Photographers are required to disclose both their creative and printing processes. As stated above, reprints are not allowed.

Sculpture: Three-dimensional original work done in any medium.

Wood: Original works in wood that are hand-tooled, machine-worked, turned, or carved are accepted in the wood category.
