WE THE UNDERSIGNED OPPOSE HR 4103, the "Martin's Cove Land Transfer Act" and any other effort to convey land to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints or any other sectarian religious group for the following reasons:
- HR 4103 circumvents local public process to give favored legislation to an exclusive single private entity.
- Martin’s Cove shares identical historical routes with the Oregon, California and Pony Express National Historic Trails. The entire area surrounding Martin's Cove is replete with Native American sites as well as legendary landmarks of the U.S. Westward movement. Martin's Cove is only a single tragic event in the vast history of Wyoming.
- It is a violation of land use policy. The Bureau of Land Management Resource Management Plan does not allow for the sale or disposal of ANY historical sites or segments of the Oregon/Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trails.
- The sale of this land could foster a single interpretation of history. American history belongs to all Americans, not to a special interest group.
- Martin’s Cove is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.
This petition will be presented to our House Representatives and Senators.
