UPDATE March 1 2012:

On Monday, March 5, American Atheists will erect two billboards to advertise the reason Rally and the American Atheists National Convention to atheists in the Muslim and Jewish Communities.  The wording on the boards will be identical: You know it's a myth, and you have a choice.   One board in Brooklyn will be in Hebrew and English, and the sister board in Arabic will be erected in Paterson NJ. Each will have the Hebrew and Arabic word for Yahweh/Allah on the left side.

A similar board will be launched in California (location TBA).

The Final graphic for the Lincoln Tunnel this year is a direct call to action for the church-pew atheists - those who pretend to believe what they know is a scam for the benefit of fitting in.  So often we hear of people who are afraid to come out of the closet to their loved ones, only to find out later that those very same loved ones are also atheists, closeted from the closeted!  Closeted atheists often feel alone because of being closeted.  Coming out will inspire the others in your life to do the same.
It's amazing how good it feels to be honest with your loved ones.  That's why American Atheists is inviting all atheists to give the gift of honesty this year.  Tell those who love you that you're an atheist.  We bet you'll find company in your very own family.

Well? What Myths DO you see?

American Atheists is once again posting seasonal billboards, this time in Florida, Ohio and for a second year in a row at the New Jersey side of the Lincoln Tunnel!

The billboards are the next stage of the "You KNOW it's a MYTH" campaign we started last year. This year we are placing myths on the billboard and asking people what they see? The purpose is to encourage people to ask themselves why one god is different from gods they call myths. It's up to them to answer --

We are asking.

There is no effort here to convert theists into atheists, but there IS an attempt to get the church pew atheists to consider what they are doing. If they look at our billboard and see four myths, including Jesus, then why are they going to church and donating money? Why are they going through this ridiculous motion of pretending to believe in a myth, just to please other people?

Some atheists don't even know they are atheists, while others are fully aware but remain closeted. This is why we ask all church-goers to consider honestly their theological beliefs this season and ask if and why they are pretending to believe the unbelievable. It is our hope that these atheists will come out of the closet, come clean to their friends and families and start living an honest life of reason and rationality.

Many atheists celebrate some version of Christmas! There is nothing wrong with gifts, trees, singing and (most of all) family togetherness. None of this requires the pretense of a belief in a god. We believe the season should include honesty -- with oneself and loved ones.

Happy Holidays!

Love,
American Atheists
