Ground Zero -- An American Tragedy, not a Christian Opportunity

For the record, yes, we oppose (as we always have) the inclusion of the WTC Cross in the WTC Memorial & Museum in NYC, and are now plaintiffs in a lawsuit for it's removal (or, alternately, atheist inclusion into the memorial).

As you may remember, the buildings were made from girders crossing each other, and in the rubble some Christians found a pair of girders still welded that closely (not exactly, but closely enough) resemble a Christian Roman Cross.

The cross has become a Christian icon. It has been blessed by so-called holy men a few times, and presented as a reminder that God, in his infinite power of goodness, who couldn't be bothered to stop the Muslim terrorists, or stop the fire, or hold up the buildings to stop 3000 people from being crushed, cared enough to bestow upon us some rubble that resembles a cross. Ridiculous.

This cross is set to be included in the official WTC Museum. No other religions or philosophies will be honored. It will just be a Christian icon, in the middle of OUR (as in Americans) museum. This will not happen without a fight.

We love this country, and our constitution. We honor the dead and respect the families, which is why we will not allow the many Christians who died get preferential representation over the many non-Christians who suffered the same fate. This was an attack against America: not Christianity. Christianity does not deserve special placement just because the girders look like their religious symbol.

We will pay for our own memorial of equal size inside the museum, or the museum will not include the cross. Equality is an all-or-nothing deal.

9/6/2011  NEWS:  Rep Grimm has proposed a bill making the cross a national monument.  Here are some talking points on this farce.

1) This is exclusionary by design.  We are asking for inclusion and equality, and their response is one of exclusion and division.

2) This is obviously against the law.  Even the most conservative judges will see this as "congress making a law respecting an establishment of religion".  This will lead to more lawsuits (led by us), and more division.  All that is needed here is a dose of equality and maybe a bit of compassion for non-Christians who fell on 9/11

3) 9/11 was not a Christian event, even if the Religious Right Politicians want it to seem so.

4) This is a perfect example of an educated and knowledgeable politician placing his bible above the Constitution, and Christianity above all other philosophies.   Let people not think we don't have a real threat of  theocracy from the religious extremists - and let us not forget that they will use even national tragedies to further their wholly UnAmerican agenda.

5) How many other religious symbols would religious extremists like  Mr Grimm  like to make official monuments?  What's next?

6) What is so darn terrible about equality and fair representation, anyway?

7) As a member of the Congressional Tea Party Caucus, Rep. Grimm's bill is hypocritical and in direct contravention to Grimm's alleged support for wanting to remove government from intruding into our lives. His bill, if passed, effectively has our government imposing and forcing Grimm's religious beliefs on all Americans. Grimm is apparently supporting socialist religion.
