merican Atheists is calling upon atheists, freethinkers, and nonbelievers everywhere to join with us in urging President Clinton to stand fast against bigotry and discrimination. As President of the United States, Mr. Clinton is awarded the position of honorary head of the Boy Scouts of America -- an organization which now has legal carte blanche to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and religious belief. Last year, for instance, he joined the Scouts for their National Jamboree celebration at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. The Jamboree was described as "a demonstration of Scouting's ability to develop brotherhood, a spirit of friendship and a source of understanding among young people."

   But millions of American youth are being denied the right the participate in the Scouting program, simply on the basis of their sexual orientation, or the fact that they don't pass a discriminatory religious litmus test. Is that brotherhood, friendship and understanding? We think not.

   American Atheists is calling upon Mr. Clinton to be President of all Americans, and not sanction the discriminatory practices of the Boy Scouts. Would he serve as an honorary head of an organization that took a similar position against women, or blacks, or some other group? We ask that President Clinton step down from this post, and join millions of Americans who are concerned about fairness and justice, in urging the Boy Scouts to reconsider their unfortunate decision to marginalize and exclude so many youth.

e urge other Atheists, freethinkers, civil libertarians everywhere to contact President Clinton, and ask that he resign his position as honorary head of the Boy Scouts of America. We also encourage you to oppose government, civic and corporate support for the Scouts, and to encourage the BSA to reconsider their policies.
