merican Atheists has learned that the New Jersey State Senate Judiciary Committee will be considering the controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act on Monday, March 23, 1998. State Director Dave Silverman reports that there may be a full committee vote, which would then clear the bill for passage to the full Senate.
So far, there has been little opposition to this measure, although some legislators have raised questions about minor points -- such as whether or not protections should be extended to prison and jail inmates. Religious groups across the political spectrum support this legislation, however. The issue of "special rights" for believers needs to be raised, and the discriminatory, pro-religion bias of the RFRA must be exposed.
The New Jersey American Atheists page has details on this legislation, including a list of elected representatives. We urge New Jersey residents to join with American Atheists in opposing this bill. In addition, check out our information resources and background on this controversial measure.
