Actually the unique combination of chromosomes that determines an individuals genome is created at the moment of conception and therefore it can be argued that an organism's life does indeed begin at this point. However, that doesn't have any bearing on the fact that an early stage embryo (less than 8 weeks) should be used for research or be terminated at the mother's request!

As I've said before I think the root problem is abandonment of enlightenment ideals and religion is just one symptom of that. Once you cast off notions of rationality and accountability then anything goes.

I also think the good ole US of A is too far gone already to worry about us catching up or "winning" any "race". Read Morris Berman's Dark Ages America for a rather sobering analysis of the current state of the United States.

The problem is bigger than gov rules. Follow the money... Students will figure out that they can make 2,3,4 times the money in real estate or managing funds. If you are going to work that hard then become a doc or dentist - so you can at least get the chicks.

See, I think you're running into a problem here as Alex isn't really liberal. In fact, he's really a libertarian. You would probably say that you didn't say HE was liberal, but what he said. I think it would be a much more effective way to reach your goal by leaving out these extra descriptions. In the last few posts, it seems like it's more important to you to attack liberalism (or people you see as liberal) than it is to discuss ideas. Further, it could be argued that conservatism is a self serving, egocentric, self contradicting set of ideas that allows people to have their cake and eat it too. Don't you think it would be a better conversation to compare pros and cons of positions rather than slapping inflammatory descriptions on it?

I think we've gone through this quite a bit here. It is human and it is life, but is it murder to have an abortion? I would and have argued no. Your question is a good one though? Can two sets of full human rights exist in one body? Who gets veto power?

In short, woman gets raped, ends up in jail and is denied (according to her and her mother) timely access to her second dose of a morning after pill due to a female jail nurse's religious convictions.

agreed. most of the real fundies are just pitiful. they do seem to like science where weapons are concerned though. they don't object to development of any weapons of mass destruction by america as far as i have seen. they want to be able to protect their vision of a dark ages america.

certainly possible. i already have friends who are having their medical and dental work done outside the united states because of innovative methods, + less red tape and lower costs. we are slowly seeding our technological advantages in all areas except that relating to the ability to wage war.

a future "rapture of sorts" is almost inevitable, but it won't be anything like the fundies think unfortunately. and all americans will pay the price for their myopia, arrogance and delusional thinking.

I know this is an older thread, so it may not be read very frequently, but I just discovered this site today. Although I am thrilled with most of the responses and attitude I see here, as a scientist I feel compelled to point out that there is no link between stem cell research and abortion. Embryos used in stem cell research were NEVER going to be babies. They are donated (or sold) fertilized eggs left over from an in-vitro fertilization (more are always collected and fertilized than used). If these embryos weren't used for stem cell research they would be THROWN IN THE TRASH. (not literally, but disposed of none-the-less)
My undying hope in the possibility of some flicker of intelligence in the human race as a whole (instead of a handful of individuals) leads me to believe that if more people realized the truth of stem cell research, it wouldn't be so widely opposed. I don't know how to get the info out there though, so if any of you blog on sites where there are a lot of sheep, please pass on the info!
