Rally For Reason Report

28 May 2007

OPREP: Speak Out and Rally for Reason in Kentucky

WHAT: Speak Out and Rally for Reason in demonstration against the new Creation “Museum”

WHERE: Speak Out at the Hilton in Florence, KY and the Rally for Reason in Petersburg, KY

WHEN: Speak Out on 27MAY07 and Rally for Reason on 28MAY07

WHO: Supporters of science

The Speak Out and Rally for Reason were put together to protest the opening of the new Creation “Museum” by Answers in Genesis.

I attended the Speak Out on May 27th at the Hilton in Florence, KY. The Speak Out was a sort of Pep Rally for those attending the next day’s Rally for Reason. A host of wonderful speakers talked to a crowd of over 100 people. Organizers had to open up the room’s partition to access the room next to the original room.

The speakers at the Speak Out included Frank Zinder (American Atheists), Chuck and Nicole Smalkowski, Dr. Gretchen Mann, Carly Nichols and Melissa Hartman (Rally for Reason), Dr. Gene Kritsky (Evolutionary biologist), Dr. Helen Kagin (Camp Quest), Rev. Mendle Adams, Hemant Mehta (I Sold My Soul On E-Bay), Arene-Marie (American Atheists, Michigan), Blair Scott (American Atheists, Alabama), and Edwin Kagin (American Atheists, Kentucky).

The next day we headed out to Petersburg to demonstrate outside the iron gates, roving creationism guards, and guard dogs of the Creation “Museum.” The head count during the peak period of the demonstration was over 200 participants there supporting science and speaking out against mythology and superstition.

The Smalkowski family band entertained the participants. Additional speeches as well as an open-mic period kept the participants excited about the event. We also had the pleasure of hearing from Dr. Lawrence Krauss, a professor of astronomy and physics at Case Western University and author of “The Physics of Star Trek.”

Press were everywhere at the event, including NPR (interviewing for Morning Edition), PBS (interviewing and filming for a documentary), Ohio and Kentucky newspapers and TV news channels. Video of the demonstration was also piped to CNN and was covered on Anderson Cooper during the 5 PM (EST) broadcast.

We had an excellent time at the Rally for Reason and speaking out in support of science and against mythology and superstition. It was an honor to stand alongside so many supporters of science and reason.

A gigantic kudos needs to go to the organizers of the Rally for Reason. Their professionalism showed through in one of the best-organized events I have ever attended. They arranged for a shuttle service between the designated parking area and the rally point, had visible vests to easily identify Reason for Rally staff members, and worked directly with the Boone County Sheriff’s office and with local land owners to secure our parking and staging area. The combination of the Speak Out and Rally for Reason was a powerful combination and served a great purpose for the scientific community.

Well done ladies and gentlemen, it was a pleasure meeting some of you for the first time and seeing others again.

As an added bonus, the Rally for Reason prompted the formation of a new atheist group in northern Kentucky, the Northern Kentucky Secular Society.

200? NKY.com says sites "several dozen". When was the peak and how long did it last?

Too bad I had to work today (its bad enough I had to work on a national holiday) or I would of checked out the protest to see it in person. But you all did a great job supporting science, reason, and education over blind faith and myth. This museum is a insult to science, to education, to history, and to reason as well as my local area.

Even though I am a very heavy athiest, I believe if people want to practice religion, it should be at a personal level. But it seems like as of late, their not taking it beyond personal and trying to enforce it quite hard as fact to a public level, and this museum can't be a any more clearer representation of that. It probably won't be long before there more of these "Creation Museums" and maybe these people won't stop there either, they might also aim to turn normal museum's into creation museums as well, and then they will bend history books in schools to follow the Genesis story instead of the facts historians and scientists have always known...

But as I said before, I'm glad there's groups out there like Rally for Reason that against this and trying to help people wake up and realise what's going on, try to make these people think instead of believe bronze age lies, and whatnot.

Naw. Don't think so. The religious right is going down and within just a few years. They hitched their wagons to a homocidal US president and that is going to be their demise.

OT but I don't care. My heart sank with a thud when I read Cindy Sheehan's farewell post on the Daily Kos. Here's an excerpt.

"I will try to maintain and nurture some very positive relationships that I have found in the journey that I was forced into when Casey died and try to repair some of the ones that have fallen apart since I began this single-minded crusade to try and change a paradigm that is now, I am afraid, carved in immovable, unbendable and rigidly mendacious marble."

Hmmm...Since they stated 1000's would attend...I'd say the rally was a dismal failure according to their own expectations...

The head count during the peak period of the demonstration was over 200 participants

At it's peak...? And a second source stating only a few dozen...NOT 200 protesters...

What did that areial banner say...?

"Thou Shalt Not Lie"...?

Someone should listen to their own advice...

PETERSBURG - A twisting line of people perhaps five blocks long wound inside and outside the Creation Museum on Monday, waiting to see its exhibits 2½ hours after the controversial $27 million facility opened.

On the first day, the museum hosted more than 4,000 visitors, spokesman Mark Looy said Monday evening.

Beyond the gates, several dozen protesters staged a "Rally for Reason," arguing that the museum's central tenets conflict with scientific dating techniques.

4000 visitors...!!! Thanks AA for the FREE advertisments...

And who in their right mind would post that video as a success..? I counted about 45 people...and Missing in Action were Dave and Ellen...so much for support.

I'll bet the best part of the event was when Mr. Smalkowski rocked out...

The Smalkowskis are not the only ones who have problems in America's heartland. Here is a report from Oklahoma, surprisingly from a tv station.

http://www.kfor.com/global/story.asp?s=6536536

"OKLAHOMA CITY -- One of life's biggest questions in the world is, "does God really exist?" Ask 95 percent of Oklahomans and the answer is a definitive "yes," but there's a closet community who would argue against a supreme being and some say they've been threatened by Christians because of their belief.

NewsChannel 4's Lance West explores the sometimes dangerous world of living as "Atheists in Oklahoma."

Annie, get yer gun!

Not a very in depth piece by the news station, but as to be expected. The usual mention of threats by christians, which instead of being fleshed out, is followed by a quote from a minister who's trying to seem reasonable.

*sigh*

The USA is really going down the drain . It certainly is trying it best to make itself the laughing stock of the world (1st, 2nd and 3rd)

1)There is this.

Afterall, who needs to be taught real science when you can fill your kids heads with fairy tales. They don't need to learn anything really anyways because they are Americans.
Right ?

As if this wasn't bad enough only today I read about

2)The Bush administration said Tuesday it will fight to keep meatpackers from testing all their animals for mad cow disease.

Afterall, who needs safe food. Right ?

and
3)US citizens who apply for a job will need prior approval from Department of Homeland Security under the terms immigration bill passed by the Senate this week.
Even current employees will need to obtain eligibility approval from the DHS EEVS Within 60 days of the Immigration Reform Act of 2006 becoming law.

Afterall, what's wrong with the state running security checks on you and being able to black-ball you without you having any recourse.

America, home of the .... euh...hold on...it will come back to me... nope...can't recall.

-----

All in all....sad, very sad on so many levels.

Pkite, sorry to say I have to agree. I've never felt as discouraged about this country as I feel these days. I can't help but believe that 99% of those we elect are little more than greedy idiots. We're being sold down the river and it seems there is little we can do to change things.

I feel fortuante, oddly enough, to be as old as I am. Can't help but believe I lived through the best of times in what used to be a great country.

As to the number of people at the rally I would have to say over 200 at its peak (between 9 and 11 AM). I was driving one of three vans used to shuttle people from parking and I drove nonstop from 8:30 to 11:30 AM. My van held 5 to 7 adults and a round trip took about 15 minutes. Do the math. Also people came and went all day so its difficult to determine a total head count. The important thing is that our numbers were enough and our behavior was civilized. We put the Fundys on notice that we will not let their nonsense go unchallenged. Science Rules!

As a newer Atheist(agnostic for some time) I feel like I am missing something. As long as this misinformation is kept out of our science classes, is it so bad to have a museum like this? Is it a slippery slope problem. Maybe I'm not paying enough attention because I am not outraged.

cree357,

I think rather than outrage I feel embarrassed and incredulous with regard to the 'museum'. I think what bugs most people is that the museum purports to be 'scientific' when in reality it's a religious museum - specifically xian.

It's setting itself up as a 'scientific' source for those gullible enough to accept its teachings at face value.

You have to ask yourself what's next?

A museum perhaps that shows the other possible explanation to the so called "theory" of gravity. Have you ever seen gravity? Are you sure that it isn't just a commie anti-christian invention that is forced upon you and yours? Are you sure that you have heard the real truth about it? Have you been permitted to explore the actual scientific data and seen where it fails?

Perhaps a museum that teaches in a christian-scientific (=we make it up as we go) how only those people that don't believe in the TRUE god can get HIV.

Don't forget that if a religious person says that he respects your beliefs/viewpoint he means that he respects them for as long as he think he can persuade you to join his.
You just have to look at the catholic church. Everywhere that it wasn't the biggest it will declare freedom of religion. As soon as it became the biggest in any country...freedom of religion meant that you could choose if you went to this catholic church or that one.

I guess I can see where there is an attempt to undermine scientific teaching. To me it is like a big church and anyone able to be influenced by its"teaching" already has an incredible suspension of disbelief

This museum is dumb and the Christians who believe in this stuff are stupid.

Is it ok to call Christians stupid on this blog?

I used to visit this blog under the name "bob". If anyone remembers me they will remember I liked president bush. I have changed since then. I now have an extremely low opinion of bush and most other republicans. Was I an idiot for defending George W. Bush? Yes, I sure was. But those days are over now. The republican party is too infested with christians. I would now vote for anyone but a republican.

For a long time now I have been visiting a Christian blog. Those people are crazy but they were so completely out of their minds they were kind of interesting. It's just amazing how many things they believe in that not only have zero evidence, they are also as improbable as anything could possibly be. Anyway I was thrown out of there and thank goodness I was thrown out. Hanging around with Christians too long is not good for anyone's sanity.

I'm very interested in evolution and also I'm interested in why so many Americans reject evolution.

Part of the problem is the liars like Ken Ham and his insane creation museum. I think the main problem is the gullible and incredibly stupid Christians who believe everything these liars say.

Another problem is many creationists or maybe most creationists are convinced they will go to hell if they accept evolution. Why risk eternal torture in hell? It's better to just not think and accept all Christian nonsense unconditionally, and never question anything. Christians think it's a virtue to have faith. Of course faith is the process of non-thinking.

Another reason Christians can't accept evolution is because it conflicts with Genesis. If Genesis is wrong then the whole Bible could be wrong. So they must reject evolution no matter how much evidence for it they are shown. Of course the entire Bible is fiction and weird violent nonsense, but Christians have to believe every word in the Bible is from God.

Another reason Christian will never accept evolution is because they think evolution is a joke. They think it's funny when scientists claim we are just another ape species. Christians have been brainwashed since birth to believe humans are separate from nature, and humans are not animals. I ask these Christians do you think we are plants? But they don't get it.

Should anything be done about the liars at the Bible websites and the anti-science Disco Institute? Should anything be done about the incredible ignorance of science in the American population? I don't think anything can be done. I don't think there's any hope for America. Americans are as stupid as dogs and nothing can change this unfortunate fact. About all that can be done is keep fighting the never ending attempts by stupid worthless christians to dumb down the teaching of science.

If anyone thinks I'm extremely anti-Christian, they are right. Christians are nutjobs. Their belief in the Resurrection is insane and childish. They are constantly fighting science and the world would be better off without these moron holy rollers.

I'm also extremely anti-muslim. Muslims are barbarians. They are insane and they are dangerous. Their women are ugly and their men are even more stupid than the worst Christians.

Jews, especially religious Jews, are also a problem. What a stupid idea to create a country surrounded by people who hate them. The Jews are not as insane as Muslims but they do their share of causing religious conflicts in the Middle East. I have liked many Jews I have met, they are mostly very intelligent, but the world could do without their religion. Their claim that God gave them land in the Middle East and their claim that they are God's chosen people is disgusting. Also, there is no God. Gods, also known as invisible magic men in the sky, are nothing more than childish wishful thinking.

OK, I'm done complaining about religious idiots now. See you all later.
