Anonymous V Scientology

The following comes from an old friend of mine, who shall remain nameless. But she is wrong.

Scientology is NOT a cult -- it's a scam. A money-making scam, not even worth the label of "cult". Challenging the tax-exempt status of a scam seems like a worthwhile cause to me...

On February 10, 2008, over 9000 people worldwide joined in mass demonstrations at Scientology centers. These people are known as "Anonymous." "Anonymous" has no structure, hierarchy, website, group, or leaders. People who call themselves "Anons" are sometimes internet pranksters, and some self-described "Anons" have engaged in unlawful activities against some groups or websites, such as creating "Denial of Service" attacks to shut the websites down. However, most "Anons" are just average internet users who can be found on "futaba"-based imageboards, where they post anonymously. They are known to ridicule and mock anything they do not like or agree with. They are known for spreading silly memes and creating many inside jokes.

The events leading up to the February 10 protests were the leaking of several videos from inside the Scientology group. In one video, actor Tom Cruise rambled on about how "LRH Tech" (L. Ron Hubbard Technology) can "save the world." In another video, Scientology leader David Miscavige used inflammatory language along with video imagery of hand grenades and explosions to describe how Scientology would "destroy" psychiatry (see www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvlFh7nPkZE). As these videos made their way around the internet, the Scientologists began issuing legal threats about copyright violations, trying to get the videos removed. They were unsuccessful. "Anonymous" became outraged by the Scientologists' actions, and vowed to "bring down the CoS."

A website called "Enturbulation.org" (http://www.enturbulation.org/) was created to harness the energy of "Anonymous." Videos "from Anonymous to Anonymous" were spread virally in chat rooms and on YouTube. Many "Anons" decided to join in the "real life" demonstration scheduled for February 10, some "for the lulz" (for laughs), and some who truly oppose Scientology.

The demonstrations were successful. There are pictures and videos all over the internet. Thousands of people joined in. I myself forwarded some info to some atheist listservs I'm on, and I attended the February 10 event in Philadelphia. I wanted to see if internet trolls would really leave their computers to demonstrate against the CoS. They did.

At the demonstration, people had signs reading "Google Lisa McPherson" (she was a member of the "Church" who died when Scientologists denied her medical treatment), and "Google Paulette Cooper/Operation Freakout" (Scientologists tried to silence this critic by framing her; they tried to have her incarcerated). The signs directed people to visit websites such as Xenu.net and WhyAreTheyDead.net. I visited all of these sites and I was amazed by what I learned. Scientology is not a religion in the traditional sense of the word, it is indeed a cult that brainwashes its members, steals their money, and destroys their families.

Since Sunday, I have learned much more information about Scientology and why people think it is a dangerous cult. Unlike most religions, Scientology charges exorbitant fees for participating and advancing in the "Church." The "Church" interferes with families, attacks those who leave it or who speak out against it. They have had their tax-exempt status revoked in the past, and they were found guilty of interfering with the IRS.

Members of "Anonymous" have suddenly become activists, challenging the most wealthy and insidious cult in the world. They are staging another worldwide demonstration on Saturday March 15, 2008, from 11am-4pm local time, to draw public attention to the dangers of Scientology, the threat to psychiatry, and the CoS tax fraud scheme.

There are organizational threads on Enturbulation.org, where you can find more information if you are interested. Or email me directly if you have any questions.

Scientology is NOT a cult -- it's a scam.

Actually it's both...

cult-: a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents
4: a system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator

Yes, it's a scam. It charges dues for the sole purpose of letting their leaders live a cushy life...

Wait a minute...I need to read that earlier thread again...

$cientology deserves to have it's tax exempt status removed not because it is a scam or a cult but because all religions should pay their fair share instead of being social parasites sucking at the teat of the American taxpayer.

Suck it Jeebus! and Tom Cruise too!

Scientology is as much a religion as any religion. Anonymous is a bunch of juvenile delinquent xians behaving like the weak little wussies they are outside of THEIR cult.

Depending on the particular emphasis one places on the word cult, I think you are both right. Amazing feeling, to find some agreement with Phreedm.

The emphasis I would prefer is that they are an organised criminal agency that not only deceives, defrauds and damages its recruits, but frequently commits crimes against individuals external to the agency. On top of that it is known to have committed crimes against the governments of the countries it is active in.

Yes, major religions are selling a non existent afterlife and an imaginary god to their sheep and they constantly beg for money to 'carry on the good work'.

That's not illegal.

From their Dianetics to their pseudo lie detector based 'auditing' courses, they are conning people out of their time and money and deterring people from getting real help elsewhere.

Their auditing and disconnect procedures are a form of brainwashing and personality modification. The damage continues with isolating people from friends and family and continues in their slave system called the Rehabilitation Project Force.

I have seen it alleged that ever since the organisation decided that protection under the First Amendment would be useful to it in the US, it has pursued a policy of appearing to be a religion, with ministers, etc. It was claimed that this was laid out in internal Scientology policy documents (Vol. 1 p.41) (Vol.1 p.196) (Vol. 2 p.238,239) (Vol.4 p.405).

It appears then that they are cynically simulating a religious organisation for financial and political advantage.

Cone on! All religions are cynical simulators. Scientology plays the religion game as deftly as any other religion. If you want to see brainwashing, personality modification and isolation culling you don't have to go further than your local evangelical church. Step inside sometime or go to one of their summer camps for kids where it gets batshit crazy.

I agree with alexatheist. Religions should not get special treatment in tax law.

Religions should not get special treatment in tax law.

I would amend that "tax law" to "anything at all".
[Note that James Madison was absolutely against exempting churches from taxation: but he was voted down by his buddy founders.]

I'm with What here. There aren't enough major differences between Scientology or any of the other major religions to call it anything other than a religion.

If you call Scientology a scam then you also have to call any other church a scam. I won't object to this, in fact I agree.

L. Ron basically took a mishmash of various religious beliefs and added some Sci-Fi to come up with his own religion that he then milked for every penny he could get and for the resulting popularity.

Scientology has Thetans, other religions have the Soul.

Scientology has a death/rebirth cycle, much like many other religions, from wikipedia's "Thetan" article:
When a person dies – or, in Scientology terms, when a thetan abandons its physical body – they go to a "landing station" on the planet Venus, where the thetan is re-implanted and told lies about its past life and its next life. The Venusians take the thetan, "capsule" it, and send it back to Earth to be dumped into the ocean off the coast of California.

These Thetans then attempt to invade the body of a newborn and are thus reborn as a Body Thetan.

Scientologists believe that the only way to remove these extraneous Body Thetans is by completing their ritual Auditing procedure and by removing any sources of "trauma". This is strikingly similar to the idea of Original Sin and the use of prayer to free oneself from it and the idea that one must keep one's body clean (admittedly a good idea).

Scientology also has a deity figure, albeit a particularly unpleasant one, the infamous Xenu.

So, they believe in an unsubstantiated mythology, they follow a rigid moral code, and they believe they benefit from all of this in some supernatural way. The only difference is that they charge by the hour.

They charge by the hour, they keep slaves, they get convicted for covert operations against Federal and other government agencies, they frame their critics for sex crimes and in general, are 'permitted' to commit any crime, if it is in the interests of the organisation.

The established religions have indeed carved out some nice perks for themselves. The wolves have noticed and have deliberately adopted some of the external characteristics of the traditional flock handlers.

A rigid moral code? Anything goes as long as it benefits the organisation per the wishes of the leadership is neither moral nor rigid.

It is precisely their immoral behaviour towards recruits and anyone who gets in their way that makes me view them unfavourably compared to the established myth spreaders.

I see the moral distinction that you speak of as significant in quality but insignificant in magnitude. The evangelical right came out in droves to support our war criminal president. The magnitude of the damage caused by the evangelical right dwarfs the quality of harm done by Scientologists. If Anonymous wants to do some actual good they should go after the Poop and the Baptists. Who wants to bet that major religions are not behind Anonymous?
