When the Pope was in Turkey, I remember a shocking news video containing a statement by a Vatican spokesman. I don't have a link to the video (I'm writing this from memory) but the messaqe was clear. The guy said something to the effect that the church's position was that the basic conflict in the world was not a clash of civilizations but the clash between belief and unbelief and that the Vatican would hope to have Islam as an ally. I probably have not recalled the statement exactly but I'm pretty sure I've got the essentials right. I could hardly believe what I was hearing.

BTW, I came over here to see if this organization has issued a press release about the 11 year old girl in Weston Wis who died because her parents just prayed instead of seeking medical help.

At least he is looking for a dialogue, even if it isn't with us. The monotheists are the ones killing each other. Like I care anyway what they say.

I read in horror that King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia had invited leaders of the Abrahamic Faiths to meet with him regarding "the disintegration of the family and the rise of atheism in the world – a frightening phenomenon that all religions must confront and vanquish." What was even more horrifying was YOUR positive response!

The message was cloaked in tolerance for Jews and Christians, but this isn’t about peace – it’s about a new war against a new common “enemy”: Atheists.

But we are not your enemy! Sure, we disagree on the existence of deities, but we’re just talking (like you are). Yet this “wonderful statesman” wants us vanquished, with your help.

According to the Pew Research Council, Secular people (atheists) make up about 10.4% of the US Population or about 32 Million people (twice the number of all non-Christians combined). That’s a lot of vanquishing!

All humans have something in common. We live in a world where bigotry and intolerance has devastated or destroyed whole groups of people because of thought or lineage. King Abdullah is clearly trying to organize another such effort, and like always, it’s all under the guise of “peace.” Hitler did that too.

American Atheists urges the religious leaders and parishioners to take a step back and ask yourself: “What if King Abdullah had asked for a meeting to talk about vanquishing US instead of the Atheists?”

If his Highness is really interested in peace, then all groups – monotheistic, polytheistic, and non-theistic, should be welcomed at his table. Where there is exclusion, there can never be peace.

Frankly, you should all know that by now.

But I'm doing this for several reasons:

1. Infotainment value in pointing out how much and how often supposedly christian individuals break the moral codes they claim to be promoting in today's world. Some of the brain-dead cultists (not to mention any phreakshows by name or anything like that) make it really easy to do...

I actually think this is good news. The less power someone has, the more radical they often become. I feel that if we're being attacked with permission from the clerics, the clerics power is waning and they need new targets. The devoutly religious may be under heavier critisism because the population of Saudi Arabia could be becoming more secular. Remember the rape victim a few weeks back: supposedly the majority supported not punishing her. I think the call is nothing more than a desperate attempt to hold on to power, but I may be overly optimistic.

I think that the clerics are looking for new targets as a way to retain power. Maybe Saudi Arabia is starting to demand more freedoms that the clerics are afraid of and they need something else to rally people around. I suppose I could be overly optimistic, however, but I think that this may be a sign like how increasingly secular America is getting increasingly fundie prayer warriors. Just think of the Phelps: More acceptance of homosexuality = more nutty pastors.
