National Day of Reason

Many who value the separation of religion and government have sought an appropriate response to the federally-supported National Day of Prayer, an annual abuse of the constitution. Nontheistic Americans (including freethinkers, humanists, atheists, agnostics, and deists), along with many traditionally religious allies, view such government-sanctioned sectarianism as unduly exclusionary.

A consortium of leaders from within the community of reason endorsed the idea of a National Day of Reason. This observance is held in parallel with the National Day of Prayer, on the first Thursday in May (1 May 2008). The goal of this effort is to celebrate reason - a concept all Americans can support - and to raise public awareness about the persistent threat to religious liberty posed by government intrusion into the private sphere of worship.

atheists are one of the only minorities to not have a special day or holiday. we could call it "human day". a day for everyone regardless of imaginary friends.

Every day should be a national day of reason though, that's my stance.

If the Day of Reason is on the same date as the Day of Prayer it will be eclipsed by the media. I suggest another day, perhaps April 30 to get people thinking before they begin praying.

Seeker -- how about April 30, to signify that "doing something" comes "before" praying about it?

Dave,

Yep.

Jerry Clowers told the well-worn story about the man caught in a flood. He turned down a ride when the flood warning came, a boat ride when the flood rose, and a helicopter when the waters rose to the roof. He chose, instead, to pray for God to rescue him. After drowning, he asked St. Peter why God didn't answer his prayer. Peter replied, "God sent you a car, a boat and a helicopter."

OT Alert
ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (AP) -- State police have removed three children from an apocalyptic church whose leader claims to be the Messiah and acknowledges having sex with some of his followers.

The two girls and one boy -- all younger than 18 -- were taken from the northeastern New Mexico compound after an April 22 investigation, said Romaine Serna, a spokeswoman for the state Children, Youth and Families Department, on Wednesday.

She said a fourth child, a girl, agreed to be interviewed by the department. Serna said that girl had been at the compound but now lives elsewhere with her parents.

The three children were taken into state custody because of allegations of inappropriate contact between minors and the adult leader of the Lord Our Righteousness Church, Serna said.

Join a church. Get raped. Join a church. Get raped. Join a church. Get raped. Join a church. Get raped. Join a church. Get raped. Join a church. Get raped. Join a church. Get raped. Join a church. Get raped. Join a church. Get raped. Join a church. Get raped. Does anyone see a pattern?

I'm for a National Day of Reason. I like April 30th, the day before the National Day of Prayer better.

Do we get to have a National Day of Reason Breakfast or anything?

Church head had sex with prepubescent girl, court hears
By THE CANADIAN PRESS

MONTREAL - An 18-year-old woman says the head of an obscure Christian church in Montreal had sex with her when she was a prepubescent girl.

The woman, who can't be identified, told Quebec court Thursday she was just nine years old when pastor Daniel Cormier started touching her. Cormier is defending himself against sexual-assault charges by claiming he married the girl on her 10th birthday.

But the woman said she had no idea at the time Cormier considered her to be his wife.

She says she thought of him as a friend who bought her clothes and gave her money.

The woman testified that Cormier began having sex with her well before she started menstruating.

Wow! The fact that this phreek thinks that this could possibly be considered a defense in a court of law or in the court of public opinion demonstrates the depth of religious delusions.

We don't need a special day. Everyday is a special day. And I agree with those who said having it on the same day as Nat'l day of prayer will dilute it. It will only look like what it is: a reactionary response rather than its own positive action.

We have had this exact discussion before regarding Darwin day.
