Senator Ventura?

In Minnesota, what's likely to be the most expensive and closely watched U.S. Senate race in the nation has lately been consumed by talk of an old Playboy article, a Capitol Hill crash pad and whether a onetime professional wrestler will jump in the race next week.

The contest pits Republican incumbent Norm Coleman against former Saturday Night Live funnyman Al Franken — and quite possibly former Gov. Jesse Ventura.

After months of refusing to speak with any news media, Ventura agreed Sunday to an interview with NPR in a parking lot in suburban St. Paul. He still insists he won't announce whether he's running until July 15, the deadline for filing in Minnesota.

Well, he did appear on Howard Stern a little while back, but he didn't mention running for Senator!

I love me some Franken, but any governor who goes on record for calling religion a "crutch for weak-minded people" gets my vote for ANYTHING.

I also love the way he says "Minesooota".

If I recall, Ventura was the only governor to refuse to acknowledge the National Day of Prayer. He may have benefitted from his name recognition in becoming governor, but from what I can tell he was a damn good one.

Jesse Ventura will be on Larry King Monday. Hope he body slams god again then puts him in a sleeper hold. As fake as wrestling is at least the actors can perform the stunts they're paid to do. It would be funny to see Jesse and Al Franken double team the Pope. That would be a great skit for Sat Night Live. The Pope and Satan VS Jesse and Al. The Pope would have fire up his sleave and Satan would throw sand.

Having lived in Minnesota while Jesse was in office there, I came to appreciate his the rights of free minded folks. Yes, I recall too his independence with regard to the Ntl Day of Prayer. Also his autobiography indicates his strength of character & willingness to simply do what he believes is right. We need more politicians like him. If he runs for Senator I hope he wins.

I don't think he's an atheist, after his crutch comment he clarified himself to be referring to organized religion especially fundamentalism, and that he counted himself among spiritual people.

I'd like to clarify my comments about religious people being weak-minded. I didn't mean all religious people. I don't have any problem with the vast majority of religious folks. There are lots of people out there who think they know the truth about God and religion, but does anybody really know for sure? That's why the founding fathers built freedom of religious belief into the structure of this nation, so that everybody could make up their minds for themselves.
But I do have a problem with the people who think they have some right to try to impose their beliefs on others. I hate what the fundamentalist fanatics are doing to our country. It seems as though, if everybody doesn't accept their version of reality, that somehow invalidates it for them. Everybody must believe the same things they do. That's what I find weak and destructive.

Good luck to Jesse.
I think we need instant runoff elections to help give independents a chance. Then people wouldn't have to worry about wasting their vote. If someones first choice goes to the last place candidate that candidate is eliminated and his second choice is counted etc.
Some people have claimed that this means giving people more than one vote so it is not fair that is a false argument since only one vote will be counted and everyone would play by the same rules.

Hope you all had a chance to watch Jesse on Larry King. Damn! He said he wasn't running but he had till 5PM tomorrow to change his mind. After slamming god numerous times he said he wouldn't run unless he heard directly from god the way GW heard from god when he invaded Iraq. I love it. Last time I looked, the online pole placed Jesse at 74%. I suspect tomorrow he will say he didn't hear from god but the people spoke clearly. I'll send him a check if he runs.

Personally I dont care if he's a hindu as long as he will stand up for the rights of individuals to believe as they please and not feel he has to kowtow to the evangelists.
