Book Critical of Muhammed to be Published.

Denmark Intends to Publish MEDINA
Danish publishers association Trykkeselskabet has approved the publication of Shery Jones's novel THE JEWEL OF MEDINA in Denmark. A spokesperson told a Danish newspaper, "Fear or threats should not keep a book from being published. It would be principally and entirely a renewal of all that Denmark has already been through with the Mohammed cartoon affair."

To that point, Jones's agent Natasha Kern wrote to the society, "When you consider what's happened in your country, I admire your readiness to ensure that freedom of expression is not obstructed."

The novel was brought into the spotlight in the US after Denise Spellman, a professor of Islamic history at the University of Texas, was quoted in the Wall Street Journal as saying the book was 'much more controversial than the Mohammed drawings from Denmark'. She called any decision to publish the book a 'declaration of war' against Muslims.

But Trykkeselskabet indicated that it felt the book needed to be published.

'Fear or threats should not keep a book from being published,' association spokeswoman Helle Merete Brix told Nyhedsavisen newspaper. 'It would be principally and entirely a renewal of all that Denmark has already been through with the Mohammed cartoon affair.'

Congratulations to Denmark and the Danish publisher for publishing a book critical of Muhammad. Yet another book critical of Muhammad and Islam is quite in order when one considers the place of women, homosexuals, and infidels in Islam. I, personally would like to see more criticism of Islam on the NoGodBlog. We sure bash Christianity a plenty-- and Islam is a much more pernicious bad religion than Christianity.

I don't know why, but for some reason massive controversy over depictions of Muhammad in the Western World seems to be a post 9/11 phenomenon. On July 4th of 2001 South Park showed an episode called Super Best Friends that featured several minutes of unredacted Muhammad footage where he spoke, identified himself as Muhammad, and used his power of fire. Anyone have any ideas why this didn't experience any backlash?

I thought Mohammed Ali was a great athlete. Pity what a that pounding did to his brain. Should anybody real be skeered of him in his present state.

That Super Beat Friends episode was awesome - and has been rebroadcast (without editing Mohammed out) several times since.

But the best part is Jesus using his one super power

"Using the wood that Krishna cut down as a beaver, Jesus uses his master carpentry skills to make a giant mold."

Has anyone heard of "Family Life Education"? My daughter had a form sent home for authorization and nothing said anything about religion. Googled it and it appears to be from a christian perspective.

Excellent for Denmark. Fuck any idiot that doesn't like it. As a writer, I would never want my work censured because some pansy religion fuckwads might be offended by it. Fuck them all. Go Denmark!!!

First they publish the cartoons, now the book. I guess it's ok to say we should envy their freedom of speech which is better than ours here.

'declaration of war' against Muslims.

Are you fucking kidding me? Because of a book?
Just goes to show you how screwed up religion is and the people that follow it.

Suck it, religious fucktards.

No, haven't heard of it, but looking at their website they say that they use the faith community as one of the means of delivering 'family life education,' mention BYU in both present and past projects, and have a quote from the Director of the Family Studies Center at BYU. It certainly has a faith component to it, even if the form your daughter got didn't mention it.

Speak of freedom of the pen. I found this letter at cafemom daily digest. I think younes'll get a kick out of it.

Quoting blueyedalls:

This has always been my favorite letter to explain why Leviticus' scripture about homosexuality as an abomination is moot:

Dear Dr. Laura:
Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's law. I have learned a great deal from you, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him or her that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.
I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how best to follow them.
1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Leviticus 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. How should I deal with this?
2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as it suggests in Exodus 2 1:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Leviticus 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.
4. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans but not Canadians. Can you clarify?
5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Leviticus 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
7. Leviticus 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die?
9. I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?
10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

While I think the book should be published freely (marketplace of ideas), I am not necessarily saying I support it (I suspect I may not). Much of what is passed off as criticism of Islam these days is actually racist propaganda against Muslims. Atheists should not join religious right-wingers in this kind of racism. We should know better.

The Koran, Old, and New Testaments contain horrible stuff, to be sure. But, fact is, this is not how the religions are practiced in the mainstream. The nutjobs account for a fraction of a percent of the majority of followers. But some of these books promote nuclear strikes against the whole Muslim world. Sorry, not with you there.

Of course, if no one can access the book, how would we ever know for sure what it really says?

cry4turtles,
I saw that a few years ago and have looked for it periodically. Thank you so much.

Alas, the modern truechristian realises that god's word only applies to the Hebrews to whom the deity was sprechen.(Except of course the parts that sound good to a christian.)

I could watch this clip over and over and over. The one titled "Religious smackdown in the whitehouse" is good too.

To Whom it May Concern (staying out of trouble)

It has become known worldwide that it that the Islamic law is that Muhammed is not to be drawn, painted, or depicted in sculpture. I think that is actually a baby step toward sanity, judging from your average worldwide religious view. After all, we see Catholics bowing, making little symbos across their chests in front of statues of crucified Jesus, and statues of Mary, the human that gave birth to god, or whatever. Then there are the shrines of Buddha and Vishna (spelling?). Like these statues embody the gods themselves. Egyptians, Greeks, Chinese, Japanese, etc., someone sculps a statue in the vision of a holyman and it becomes more important than the life of any individual or family or village or state.
I say if Jesus can be a regular on "South Park" then Muhammed is welcome as well to tell his side of how best to lead humans into their own self destruction.

Here's a subject for a thread. Apparently
a popular and well known Aussie preacher from Melbourne faked a two-year battle with cancer to bilk the flock. For reasons that are unclear he is blaming his fraud on a porn addiction. Huh?

Just google Guglielmucci and porn and you should find plenty of links to the story. It's comical.

I totally agree and I amazed that some don't know better. Religion has a long history as a tool of imperialists. BushCo didn't give a damn about xians but it used those dolts fear of Islam to whip them into a murderous frenzy and costly invasion of a country that posed no threat to the US.

Thanks Tarma, talked with the instructor and he insisted faith and religion have nothing to do with it, but absenence is taught until marrage. I basically said, cool, cause I sure don't want to contact the ACLU if religion is brought into this class. Will keep a close watch on this.

CryForTurtles: That was great. Thanks

DeepDiver,

Given that abstinence until marriage instruction has little to no effect on unwanted pregnancies for teens or adults, unless they are at least providing specific details on how pregnancy occurs, they won't be much help.

Can't remember where I first heard it, but this quote from a pregnant teenager has always stuck with me. "I can't be pregnant. We never kissed, I swear. You can't get pregnant if you don't kiss."

Whether this lot scrupulously avoids advocating religion or not, I rather doubt they will spend much time discussing effective contraceptive methods.

DD: You are right, they absolutely will not bring up contraceptives. He said as much. I know abstenance is a joke, and an insult to our intellegence. I told him, that is ok, I will get a book that explains it and have her read it. Just to fill in the blanks. (Yes I am a coward, not about to explain how to put on a condom to my daughter.)

I have also heard that "Oral sex is not sex, nor is anal".

Deep Diver, and the rest,
Abstaining from sex worked really well when raped women were put to death for not resisting enough, or not screaming loud enough. So when you're raped, it's your most gaurded secret, hiding in the shadows hoping you are not pregnant. If you are pregnant, you run before your own family murders you to preserve their honor. Even if any chance of actually enjoying sex was terminated when they burned off, or cut off your clitoris at age ten.

In a hopefully kind way I would say that any parent with teenage children who has not explained the dangers of sexually transmitted disease, and the ramifications of unwanted pregnancy is hiding from the reality that nature will not be denied. Hormones in the brain turn the sight of a handsome guy or a pretty girl into your undeniable soulmate. You can't stop it. All you can do is put measures in place to prevent it from becoming a life changing mistake.
