Secular Government

Federal Policy

We ensure the voices of atheists and other nonreligious people are heard in Washington, D.C.

While Congress grinds to a halt, the federal government is still taking actions that affect the lives of all Americans.

Washington, D.C. is about more than the legislative gridlock we see in Congress. The White Christian Nationalist movement is using agencies of the federal government to rewrite the rules and threaten our rights. That’s why we focus our advocacy in three core areas.

01

Engaging With Agencies

Most federal policy isn’t made on the floor of the House. It’s written in the offices of agencies like the Department of Health & Human Services, the Department of Education, and the Department of Justice.

We submit expert testimony and public comments to help shape regulations that implement the law. And we fight to ensure that taxpayer-funded programs remain secular and inclusive, preventing religious exemptions that would allow discrimination in healthcare, foster care, and employment.

02

Accountability & Analysis

We provide rapid, expert analysis and fact-checking of the actions taken by the Trump Administration. When Executive Orders or agency actions threaten religious equality, we sound the alarm.

A key strategy of the White Christian Nationalist movement is to overwhelm us. That’s why we cut through the noise to break down complex actions and explain exactly how these actions impact atheists and non-religious Americans.

We use federal transparency laws to monitor the administration for overreach, ensuring that religion is not weaponized to erode our civil rights.

03

The Future of the Courts

We know that personnel is policy. Federal judges, vetted by the White Christian Nationalist movement and nominated by Donald Trump, serve for life and their rulings will shape our rights for generations.

Working with other civil rights organizations, we rigorously monitor judicial nominations to the federal bench and help expose nominees with records of hostility to religious equality.

We advocate for major reforms to our nation’s judicial system, including the Supreme Court, to undo the damage that’s been done and restore confidence in the judiciary. Our courts must be fair, independent, and representative of the people — not a tool for religious privilege.
