What Do Atheists Do This Season? CELEBRATE

WHAT DO THE GODLESS DO FOR THE HOLIDAYS?
     WHY, CELEBRATE, OF COURSE!

So, what do Atheists -- and others in the growing segment of Secular, non-religious Americans -- do at this time of year?  Ed Buckner, President of American Atheists, says that this is the season for celebration, and that all should rejoice and revel in this time of year.
It is marked by the occurrence of the Winter Solstice for the Northern Hemisphere, that time when the sun reaches the lowest point in its annual journey across our sky.  While the Solstice occurs on Sunday, December 21, 2008 at 7:04 EST (12:04 GMT), many Atheists, Freethinkers, Humanists and other religious nonconformists hold social events with family and friends.

" 'Tis the season for celebrating, and we should all rejoice," said Mr.
Buckner.  "This is especially important since Atheists and others who work for the strict separation of church and state are often falsely accused of trying to suppress all religious expression during the holidays.  We seek only to prevent government from deciding, for anyone, whether or not to express religion or endorse belief."

Dave Silverman, Communications Director for American Atheists, said that the growing popularity of Solstice celebrations points to a diverse and pluralistic America.  "For Atheists, the Solstice is a time to remember our connections with the natural world.  It is an event that is common to all humanity, and it gives us an opportunity to celebrate a 'natural holiday.' "

American Atheists can provide your news organization with a unique perspective on this time of year, including interviews with people who celebrate this season.  "We enjoy parties, enjoy celebrations and presents, and we enjoy life.  We certainly are not trying to keep Bill O'Reilly or anyone else from celebrating."
