On September 11, 2001, tragedy struck America. Religious terrorists hijacked airliners, and turned them into weapons of destruction. Thousands died at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in rural Pennsylvania where courageous passengers fought back against faith-based thuggery.
Our President and other political leaders called for unity in the face of this crisis. They also rallied the nation to prayer and religious ritual, thus excluding tens of millions of citizens who are loyal and patriotic, but profess no religious beliefs.
On September 11, 2002, our nation will commemorate the one-year anniversary of this horrific event. This time, however, we want Atheists, Freethinkers, Humanists -- and all others who reject religious creeds -- included in the important rituals and events which reflect our nation's unity in this time of crisis!
HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE
SecularMemorials.Org is encourging all Atheist, Freethought,
Rationalist, Humanist and other like-minded groups to begin
planning SECULAR commemorative events for the September 11, 2002
anniversary. These can include anything from silent observances
to participation in other public events. The key word here is
"public." Public ceremonies -- parades, vigils and other commemorations
which honor the victims of September 11 have inevitably been
dominated by religion. Elected officials have often acted as
spokespersons for religious faith, encouraging prayer and belief
as a fitting national antidote for terrorism.
In the process of doing so, millions of Americans have been excluded and marginalized. (The latest American Religious Identification Survey, ARIS, notes that 30 million Americans profess "no religion," and cites "a vast and growing population of those without faith...")
We are those "Seculars." Our ranks include Atheists, Agnostics, Freethinkers, Rationalists, Humanists and others-of-no-religious-faith.
