Join Us In Protest On The Steps Of The Supreme Court!
Wednesday, March 2, 2005 — 9:00 AM
Oral Arguments In TWO Cases Involving Ten Commandments Displays.
When: Wednesday March 2, 2005 - 9:00AM
Where: On the steps of the Supreme Court of the United States, Washington DC
Why: McCREARY COUNTY V. ACLU OF KY and VAN ORDEN V. PERRY
More Info: Virginia State Director Rick Wingrove.
Officials in McCreary, Pulaski, and Harlan counties in Kentucky, in a
concerted effort, placed framed copies of the Ten Commandments - a
fundamental component of the Christian religion - in the halls of 2 county
courthouses and 1 school building. They are attempting to ignore, muddle,
and circumvent the law by having the displays brought in under the guise of
a "private donations", as one element of an 11 piece "educational exhibit",
and by claiming that it has nothing to do with religion. Naturally, the ACLU
sued and won in US District Court. This flagrant attempt by christian
fundamentalists to use government as an extension of their ministries is
being appealed in the Supreme Court.
Van Orden involves a granite monument on the grounds of the Texas State
Capitol. Texas is being sued for removal and has proven reluctant. Hence, it
is twofer day at SCOTUS!
As usual, I will be down there with a sign and an opinion. Various Atheist,
Separationist, and Humanist groups will be in attendance. I hope you will
join us for a day of protest over these patently unconstitutional religious
activities. Given the current political climate, and the renewed aggression
of the religious right, emboldened by their perceived influence over the
recent elections, it is time for all of us to Speak Out. Together we can be
more than a voice, more than a presence - we can be a force. Join with us so
that they know we are out here and that we disapprove of efforts to subvert
the Constitution.
Remember - Silence is Consent
