American Atheists holds National Conventions to bring together members of the atheist community from across the country. Past convention speakers include Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Dr. Sian Proctor, Chris Kluwe, Greta Christina, Hugh Laurie, AZ State Rep. Athena Salman, activist Jim Obergefell, and many others. With educational presentations, social events, comedy and game nights, training workshops, exhibits, and opportunities for networking, conventions are the highlight of the year for hundreds of American atheists.
American Atheists conventions have traditionally been held over Easter weekend in cities including Philadelphia, Phoenix, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Salt Lake City, Memphis, Austin, Denver, Oklahoma City, Des Moines, and others. In 2017, American Atheists celebrated the first total solar eclipse in the continental United States in decades by hosting the convention in North Charleston, SC, in August.
The 2025 National Convention is April 17–20 in Minneapolis! Updates and announcements can be accessed through the convention website.
American Atheists is proud to host the 2026 World Humanist Congress, in partnership with Humanists International, in Washington, DC in August 2026. The World Humanist Congress is a triennial event that brings together representatives from the global humanist, atheist, and secular community to learn from one another and work toward addressing the most pressing issues of our time. Mark your calendars for August 27–30, 2026, and sign up for updates at the World Humanist Congress site.
