Our Work

Breaking Down Barriers

Legal equality isn’t enough. It’s up to us to foster societal, cultural, and institutional acceptance of atheists and other nonreligious people.

Despite the progress we’ve made, atheists experience stigma, discrimination, and exclusion every single day.

Too many atheists and nonreligious people still face the real-world effects of negative stereotypes, misunderstandings, and outright bigotry about our community.

Whether it’s in classrooms, in our workplaces, when trying to get medical care, or even from members of our own families, this discrimination causes profound harms.

There are problems that no law can fix and injuries that no lawsuit can undo. Instead, it’s up to us to live boldly and unapologetically as atheists to break down the barriers our community still faces, normalizing our inclusion in every corner of society.

Building a More Just, Inclusive Society

We’re fighting to ensure atheists and other nonreligious people can live our lives free from all forms of discrimination. That means combating bias and bigotry wherever it is, using every tool in our toolbox.

Ending Discrimination

We know that atheists still face discrimination in the workplace, in housing, and even within the legal system itself. If you’ve been discriminated against, our team will help you file complaints with your state civil rights agencies to protect your rights.

Resources & Training

We offer resources — including in-person and virtual training, speakers, best-practices guides, and other programming — for employers, educators, health care providers, counselors, chaplains, and other professionals.

Building Bridges & Partnerships

We’re excited to work with anyone who shares our values and our commitment to protecting equality for all. We build bridges with other civil rights groups and work to connect our members and supporters with on-the-ground partners.

Breaking down the long-standing barriers atheists face takes time and resources. But it will make the path just a bit easier for those who come after us. If you believe, as we do, that it’s worth doing right now, we hope you’ll support this vital work.
